Mardi Gras/Prides – issues arising in counselling
Mardi Gras & Prides are times of year that can be exhilarating, confronting, and community building events. Clients who have excluded or marginalised gender, body, kinship, and sexuality lived experiences may often experience a myriad of emotions and thoughts as well as being targets of violence and oppression at these times of year. Join Francis Voon as we discuss this year’s theme in a therapeutic context – honouring our client’s histories whilst urging them to imagine possibilities ahead.

“Our Future… is not just a theme but a call to action, a bold invitation to define and shape our path forward as a community. It acknowledges our past, but encourages us to envision what comes next. It’s a statement that is open to interpretation and engagement, irrespective of geographical location or physical attendance. It’s our collective journey and story to share.” - Gil Beckwith, CEO of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, on the Sydney Mardi Gras Festival 2024.

We will be exploring the themes of:
• Identity
• cultural knowledge, attitudes, affirming practices
• humility & resonance,
• minority stress, integration, intersectionality
• casual discrimination / micro aggressions
• disclosure & positioning
• Personal, political, civic rights
• Kinships, polyamorous and/or other multi-partner connections/relationships & logical families
• Erasure, misunderstandings & the alphabet
• Resilience factors
• Gifts & contribution
This PD is intended for all counsellors & therapists seeking to work with people whose genders, bodies, kinships, and sexualities have been excluded or marginalised.
