Fuller Hall, Crows Nest Centre

Presented by Dr. Gwenyth Francis

This Professional Development Workshop will focus on the childhood origins of the narcissistic defence that underlies narcissism. Those with narcissistic traits rarely present for therapy due to the lack of insight that is associated with narcissism, particularly the belief that others are the main contributing factor to their difficulties. Individuals with narcissistic traits tend to have very destructive relationships and have limited to no capacity for empathy and can be without conscience or can be violent. It takes perseverance and a high level of self care to work with this client group.

Dr Francis is a general practitioner who has focussed on mental health for the last fifteen years. She became concerned about the poor response of many of her mental health patients to routine psychological treatment and the dismissal of personality disorders a behavioural problems nothing to do with mental health. She obtained post-graduate studies in Psychological Medicine and Contemporary Somatic Psychotherapy. She now works with adult survivors of childhood maltreatment and approaches her work relationally.
