What constitutes good clinical supervision and Supervision of Supervision

Presented by Doug Sotheren

This PD explores some of the processes of clinical supervision in a collegiate atmosphere, with input, demonstration, interactive case studies and opportunity for practice.

Clinical Supervision is now recognised as a vital component in developing and maintaining quality Counsellor competence.

Yet: The editorial title “Do No Harm” leads into the May 2017 edition of the Clinical Supervisor. Each article of this issue was devoted to outlining the harm that result from Clinical Supervision. The claim that across the world up to 70% of supervisees in the mental health professions have received harmful experiences of clinical supervision (Ellis 2017, 2008) demands some serious reflection on the nature of Supervision and Supervision of Supervision.

With a commitment to quality supervision this interactive workshop aims for an exploration of the questions:

1.What is clinical supervision? Is it still a practice looking for a definition?

2.What are the systemic complexities that impact Clinical Supervision

3.What is important in Trauma informed supervision practice with its potential for empathic risk and unconscious re-enactment?

4.What practices can best ensure safe rather than harmful supervision practice?

5.What are some of the complex ethical issues that confront supervisors and supervisors of supervision?

6.What specific skills and models assist in creating SUPA-SUPERVISION?
