Working with parents to respond collaboratively when children are experiencing emotional distress
6:00pm - 8:00pm AEST October 19th
Kim uses Narrative therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and Gendlin’s Focusing techniques as ways to assist parents to get in touch with their own inner child, whose needs were never all met from their own childhood. This will help parents turn towards and lean into their emotional reactions, rather than suppress and then explode.
The presentation will include practical exercises in deconstructing the language used by parents at intake which will later assist the child to no longer be seen as the problem, but to be someone who is struggling with a problem.
Participants will learn ways to:
- Structure parent intake sessions prior to meeting the child, that meet the identified needs of the family and prepare for the first session with the child, who is the client.
- Develop contracts of agreements for contract between sessions, etc.
- Respond to and unpack parental expectations using visuals, metaphors, and questions about their values.
- Respond to the concern that ‘my child will probably not agree to counselling’ and other fears.
- Assess the family’s capacity and willingness to work collaboratively with you.
- Understand what ‘good enough parenting’ may look like, and how one’s own childhood experience will most certainly play into our work.
- Develop their therapeutic alliance and identify and manage risk assessments.
Resources and references will be provided, as well as the power point from the 2 hour presentation.
This webinar counts as 2 hours of Category A CPD (Continuing Professional Development) if you participate online, or 2 hours of Category B CPD if you are watching the recording.
You must attend 75% of a webinar in order to receive a CPD certificate.
