BEING HUMAN: Re-humanising Psychotherapy and Counselling

Centre for Existential Practice (CEP)

BEING HUMAN: Re-humanising Psychotherapy and Counselling

Online via zoom

Presenter: Professor Ernesto Spinelli

Ernesto Spinelli will speak about the dichotomy between acknowledgement that the therapeutic relationship is a key factor in both the process and outcome of therapy and the ever-increasing emphasis on inflexible methodological rules and manualised conditions of practice. In this conversation with Alison, Ernesto will discuss the consequences of the therapeutic relationship becoming more and more professionalised and less and less open to the uncertain possibilities of human encounter. He will discuss how existential approaches – which avoid bestowing on the therapist the role of superior, objective instructor and which seek to accept the ‘being-who-is-present-in-the-room’ – challenge assumptions and beliefs about what it is to be a therapist and to be practising therapy. And, importantly, how they open a way for re-humanising the profession.
