Thinking about Psychotherapy: Practice-Process and Praxis

This is the first session in the 2020 ACCAPE Webinar Series:
Integrating a philosophy of practice into Counselling and Psychotherapy accredited training: New controversies and new challenges in 2020.

The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think.
—Gregory Bateson, Steps to an Ecology of Mind, 1972

The first webinar by Dr. Tra-ill Dowie will explore some of the controversies and challenges faced by accredited counselling and psychotherapy courses to develop a clear, consistent, congruent as well as critical curricula of theory and practice for prospective student counsellors. How might research about the philosophical principles that underlie models of therapeutic practice inform and support the student counsellor to examine and embody beliefs, values and principles of their chosen therapeutic approach?

The webinar will explore philosophical axioms and their relation to practice. How can a philosophy of practice become coherent and logically constant? Is such a question about the importance of philosophy of practice dead in 2020 when educators fail to engage their students in a deeper mode of thinking about practice?
