Treatment Strategies for Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence

Presented by Dr Raymond Chip Tafrate

Successful intervention for domestic and intimate partner violence cases requires a focus on a set of risk domains and thinking patterns that facilitate aggressive, coercive, and abusive behaviour (beyond mental health symptoms and traditional irrational beliefs). In this session, common abuse patterns and perpetrator subtypes will be reviewed, as well as step-by-step guidelines for identifying relevant risk factors and treatment targets.

The majority of the material in this workshop was covered in the workshop previously named Formulation and Treatment Strategies for Intimate Partner Violence, Abuse and Anger.

Interventions are then tailored to the particular person and situational context in which violence and abuse occur. This workshop provides an efficient way to update your knowledge and skills in this challenging area.

Learning Objectives

(1) Understand the range of violent, abusive, and coercive behaviours committed by domestic and intimate violence perpetrators

(2) Learn to focus interventions on critical risk domains and thinking patterns influencing violent and abusive episodes

(3) Analyze and apply case formulation skills to a real domestic and intimate violence case

* All participants will receive prereading assignments to supplement the material presented in the course
