Heidegger’s Existential Framework for Developing Therapeutic Wisdom

An online workshop with Dr Steven Segal offered nationally via zoom over 2 half-days

In much the same way a therapist both creates their way of being a therapist and is created by their way of being a therapist. Like the artist, a therapist is generally not aware of the way in which he or she is affected and transformed by the therapeutic encounter. Because of this, the therapist is not aware of their effective and ineffective habits of practice. However, once he or she is willing to reflect on and transform their habitual way of being a therapist, he/she is ready and able to identify therapeutic blind spots and is on the road to mastery, practical wisdom and excellence in practice.

In this workshop Steven will guide you through a series of philosophical questions that emanate from Heidegger and that will provide a space in which you can begin to:

  • be curious about the taken-for-granted dimensions of your practice
  • become aware of therapeutic blind spots
  • identify effective and ineffective habits of practice
  • build a framework through which you can work in ways in which you are transformed by your practice

The aim is for you to walk away with:

  • the capacity and intention of becoming your own self-enquirer
  • a greater understanding of the key components of playfulness and spontaneity in therapeutic intuition
  • a sense that you are on a path towards developing therapeutic wisdom, excellence and mastery

Presenter: Dr Steven Segal
Steven Segal PhD (Wits), MA (Wits), BA (Wits), BA Honours (RAU), BA Honours (Wits)
Dr Steven Segal is a registered and practising psychologist. He is also recognised internationally for his work in philosophical counselling. He was an Associate Professor of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management at Macquarie University where he lectured, conducted research and developed an approach to executive coaching and psychotherapy called “Existential Executive Coaching.” He is the author of two books which look at the role of existential psychology and philosophy in leadership and management. He is the co-editor of a third book called Face to Face with Management Practice. He has published over thirty peer reviewed journal articles. Steven’s approach to psychology, therapy and teaching emerged not only out of formal studies but out of his own experience of working through mental health issues as a client and as a therapist. Anxiety overwhelmed and bewildered him in his early adult years. The more he worked through his lived experience of anxiety, the more anxiety became a source of meaning, purpose and direction in life. Steven sums up his experience with a quote from the existential philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, who said that “Whoever is educated by anxiety is educated by possibility.”
