The First Session – Strategies & Reflections with Liz Scarfe

This month we’re going to be exploring the depths of that most complex of sessions: the first session. We’ll explore different approaches to the first session, including rapport building, effective ways to begin building the therapeutic alliance, how to improve the likelihood that clients will return for a second session (if needed), and strategies that support a great first session before clients even get in the room.

An opportunity to reflect on practice together, towards better client outcomes and improved therapist job satisfaction.

Liz Scarfe is a psychotherapist (psychodynamic, somatic, and transpersonal) in private practice, specialising in trauma, working from a post-traumatic growth perspective. She also works as a facilitator (and facilitator supervisor), educator, and coach, as well as mentoring for practitioners moving into private practice. Liz is fascinated by the nuances of the therapeutic relationship, in particular how it is constructed in the early stages of therapy and is keen to discuss and learn together what works and what doesn’t when it comes to first sessions.
