Psychiatry and Psychology Meet the Law – a ‘Y’ Intersection

Presented by: Yvonne Golder

Y signifies a valuable intersection when it brings three discrete professional perspectives together, at a common point for a common good. Professionals working in the fields of psychiatry, psychology and the law are increasingly aware of the benefits of sharing their respective bodies of knowledge and their perspectives to inform quality outcomes for their clients. The LAW Survey of ‘legal need’ shows that over 20% of people will consult their doctor about their legal problem. Equally most legal professionals have clients with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety or mental illness and that these health issues may impact on their legal situation and outcomes. Have you ever had a client who suffered with psychological distress and / or a mental illness and was also in trouble with the law? Well if so, this is when you will find yourself at a Y – intersection. The Australia New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and The Law (ANZAPPL) – (Tas) – explores this intersection and its relevance to practical application, academia and effects on popular thought.
